Which format should I convert to?+−
JPEG is the most universally supported format for photos and lets you trade quality for a smaller file. WebP usually produces noticeably smaller files at the same visual quality and also supports adjustable quality, though it's very slightly less supported by very old software. PNG is lossless and the only one of the three with transparency support, but is usually a poor choice for photos - it works best for screenshots, logos, or graphics with large flat areas of color.
What happens to transparency when I convert to JPEG?+−
JPEG has no way to store transparency, so any transparent areas are filled with white before the image is saved. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.
Can I convert several images at once?+−
Yes - drop in as many files as you like. They all convert to the same output format and quality, and you can download the results one at a time or all at once with a single click.
Can this tool convert GIFs, BMPs, or icons?+−
It can read them as input - drop in a GIF, BMP, ICO, or SVG file and convert it to PNG, JPEG, or WebP. An animated GIF is flattened to its first frame only, since a browser's Canvas API has no way to keep the remaining frames.
Why does the converted file sometimes end up larger than the original?+−
Some formats compress certain kinds of images much better than others - a screenshot or logo with large flat areas of color, for example, is usually far smaller as PNG than as JPEG or WebP. If a conversion comes out larger, try a different output format or lower the quality slider.
Is anything uploaded to a server?+−
No - decoding, drawing, and re-encoding all happen locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your files never leave your device, which is also why converting a large batch may take a moment on slower devices.
