Reaction Time Test

Runs on your device. Nothing is sent.
Click to startWhen the box turns green, click as fast as you can. Space or Enter work too.Attempt 1 of 5

What's a good reaction time?

  • < 200 msExceptional - esports-level reflexes
  • 200-249 msFast - quicker than most people
  • 250-309 msAverage - a typical reaction
  • 310-379 msA bit slow - tired or distracted?
  • 380+ msSlow - try again when you're fresh

Times include your screen's and mouse's own lag, typically 10-40 ms, so the same person scores a little slower on an older monitor or a wireless mouse. Phones' touchscreens add more.

How fast are your reflexes? Click when the screen turns green - or when you hear a beep - five times, and see your average, best and rating in ms.

Test how quickly you react. Click to start, wait for the box to turn from red to green, and click as fast as you can; after five tries you get your average, median, best time and a rating. Switch to sound to measure how fast you react to a beep instead - most people are faster to sounds. Clicks are timed from the moment they happen with the browser's high-resolution clock, and clicking before the signal counts as too soon. Your best average is remembered on this device only.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal reaction time?
For a visual signal most people land between 200 and 300 ms in a test like this, with about 250 ms being typical. Under 200 ms is very fast; professional gamers and sprinters often sit around 150-200 ms. Reactions to sound are usually 30-50 ms quicker.
Why is my time slower than I expected?
Part of every result is hardware: the monitor needs time to show green and the mouse or touchscreen needs time to report the click. A 60 Hz screen alone can add up to 16 ms. Tiredness, alcohol and distraction slow people down far more.
Can I get faster?
A little. Sleep, a short warm-up and focusing on the box rather than the cursor all help. Action games train reaction speed, and keeping your finger resting on the button rather than lifting it saves a few milliseconds.
Why does an early click count as too soon?
The signal comes at a random moment between 1.5 and 4.5 seconds, so clicking before it is a guess, not a reaction. Anything faster than 100 ms after the signal is also treated as a guess - no one reacts that fast.
