PDF to Text

Runs on your device. Nothing is sent.

Drop a PDF here or click to choose

Any size, any number of pages - no limits.

Choose a PDF to get all of its text as plain text you can copy or download.

Extract the text of a PDF in reading order, with paragraphs - copy it or save a .txt file. Any language, any size, and nothing is uploaded.

Get the text out of a PDF without uploading it. The tool reads the PDF's own text layer in your browser and puts it back in reading order: lines become lines, paragraphs are separated by a blank line, two-column layouts are read one column at a time, and right-to-left scripts like Arabic and Persian come out in the right order. Show all pages or one, join wrapped lines into whole paragraphs, then copy the text or download it as a .txt file. Scanned pages have no text layer - the tool points them out and sends them to OCR with one tap.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a page empty, or the whole PDF?
Those pages are pictures of text - a scan, a photo or a fax - with no text layer inside the PDF. Use "Read page with OCR" to recognise the text in the image instead.
Does it keep paragraphs and reading order?
As well as a PDF allows. A PDF stores positioned pieces of text, not paragraphs, so the tool rebuilds them from line spacing, indents and font sizes, and reads multi-column pages column by column. Tables come out row by row with the cells separated by spaces.
What does "Join lines into paragraphs" do?
It puts each paragraph on one line instead of breaking it where the PDF wrapped it, and rejoins words hyphenated at the end of a line - handy when you paste the text into a document or an email.
Do Turkish, Arabic and other languages work?
Yes. The text is saved as UTF-8, so every alphabet survives. Arabic, Persian and Hebrew are put back into right-to-left reading order, and Arabic letters stored in their shaped forms are turned back into ordinary letters you can search.
Is there a size limit? Is my PDF uploaded?
There's no limit: pages are read one at a time in your browser, with a progress bar, so even very long PDFs work. Nothing is uploaded, and once the page has loaded it works offline too.
