Characters: 0 · bytes: 0

Convert text to binary, hex, octal or decimal bytes and back - UTF-8 or UTF-16, emoji and every language, with a byte breakdown per character.

Turn any text into binary, hexadecimal, octal or decimal bytes, or paste bytes and read them as text again. It works both ways at once: type on either side and the other follows. Text is encoded as UTF-8 (what the web and most files use) or UTF-16, so accents, Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese and emoji all come out right, and the table shows exactly which bytes each character becomes. Bytes can be pasted spaced, run together, with commas, 0x or 0b prefixes or \x escapes.

Frequently asked questions

How is text turned into binary?
Each character has a number (its Unicode code point). An encoding such as UTF-8 turns that number into one to four bytes, and each byte is eight bits. "A" is code point 65, which is the single byte 01000001; "ş" takes two bytes, 11000101 10011111.
UTF-8 or UTF-16?
Use UTF-8 unless you know otherwise - it's the encoding of almost every web page, file and API, and English letters take one byte each. UTF-16 is used inside Windows, Java and JavaScript strings; every common character takes two bytes, and emoji take four.
Why doesn't my binary turn back into text?
Either a piece isn't a byte (binary needs 8 digits of 0 and 1, values up to 255), or the bytes aren't valid in the chosen encoding - for example text that was saved as UTF-16 read as UTF-8. The message under the box points at the first problem.
Is ASCII the same as this?
For plain English letters, digits and punctuation, yes: UTF-8 gives exactly the ASCII codes (A = 65 = 01000001). ASCII stops at 127, so anything beyond it - accents, other alphabets, emoji - needs more than one byte in UTF-8.
