Shades

Convert between HEX, RGB, and HSL, check WCAG contrast, and generate a shade ramp, entirely in your browser.

This tool converts a color between HEX, RGB, and HSL notation, checks its WCAG contrast ratio against white and black text, and generates a shade ramp from dark to light - all computed locally in your browser as you type.

Frequently asked questions

What do the WCAG AA and AAA levels mean?
They're accessibility contrast thresholds from the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines: AA requires at least 4.5:1 contrast for normal text (3:1 for large text, 18pt+ or 14pt+ bold), and the stricter AAA requires 7:1 for normal text (4.5:1 for large text). Meeting AA is the common baseline for accessible text.
Why might HEX/RGB/HSL round-trip to a very slightly different value?
HSL stores hue, saturation, and lightness as rounded whole numbers, so converting RGB to HSL and back can shift a channel by a point or two due to rounding - this is normal and happens in every color tool that supports HSL.
How is the shade ramp generated?
By keeping the color's hue and saturation fixed and varying only its lightness in HSL space, from near-black to near-white. It's a simple, predictable ramp rather than a perceptually-uniform one (which would need a more complex color space), matching what most everyday color tools provide.
