Practice

A steady click from 20 to 400 BPM with tap tempo, any time signature, accents, subdivisions, swing, a speed trainer and silent bars.

A metronome keeps a steady beat so you can practise in time. Set the tempo by typing it, with the buttons or slider, or by tapping along to a song. Choose any time signature from 1 to 16 beats, group odd bars like 7/8 the way the music is felt, and tap the beats to accent or silence them. Add subdivisions and swing, let the speed trainer push the tempo up a few BPM at a time, or drop bars out to check that you're holding the beat yourself. The clicks are scheduled on your device's audio clock, so they stay exactly in time even when the page is busy - and nothing is recorded or sent.

Frequently asked questions

What does BPM mean?
Beats per minute: how many times the metronome clicks in a minute. 60 BPM is one click a second, 120 BPM two. The beat is the note at the bottom of the time signature - a quarter note in 4/4, an eighth note in 7/8. The Italian name under the number (Andante, Allegro …) is the traditional word for that speed.
How do I find the tempo of a song?
Tap the Tap button (or press T) along with the beat, at least four times. The tempo is the average of your last eight taps, so it settles as you keep going; pause for two seconds to start again.
How do I count 6/8 or 7/8?
Bars in eighths are felt in groups. 6/8 is two groups of three (1-2-3 4-5-6), so the 1st and 4th beats are accented. 7/8 is usually 2+2+3 but can be 3+2+2 or 2+3+2 - choose the grouping and the start of each group gets an accent. You can also tap any beat to change it.
How does the speed trainer work?
It raises the tempo by the step you choose every few bars until it reaches the target, then holds it - for example +5 BPM every 4 bars from 80 to 120. A negative step slows down instead. Practising a passage slowly and letting the metronome nudge it up is a classic way to build speed cleanly.
Why does it stay in time when other online metronomes drift?
Many web metronomes fire each click from a JavaScript timer, which slips when the page is busy or in a background tab. This one schedules every click ahead on the Web Audio clock, which is sample-accurate, and a background worker keeps the schedule topped up. On iPhone, turn off silent mode if you hear nothing.
Does it work offline and without an account?
Yes. Everything runs in your browser, there is nothing to sign up for, and once the page has loaded it keeps working without a connection. Your settings are remembered only in this browser.
