Why are some strings quoted in the YAML?

YAML 1.1 parsers (PyYAML and many CI and Kubernetes tools) read yes, no, on, off, y, n and numbers with leading zeros as booleans or numbers. Quoting them keeps the value a string in every parser.

What happens to anchors, aliases and comments?

Anchors, aliases and << merge keys are expanded into plain JSON. JSON has no comments, so comments are dropped when converting YAML to JSON.

Can it handle several YAML documents in one file?

Yes. Documents separated by --- are converted to a JSON array, one element per document.
