Dead Pixel Test

Runs on your device. Nothing is sent.

Click, tap or press → / Space for the next screen, ← to go back, Esc to leave. Clean the screen first - dust looks just like a dead pixel.

Test screens

Dead pixel: always black. Stuck pixel: always red, green, blue or another colour. Hot pixel: always white. Look closely on each screen, from about 30 cm (1 ft).

Resolution is what the browser reports. With several monitors it is the screen this window is on. Measured from the browser's frame rate. Battery saving or a background tab can lower it.

Stuck pixel flasher

A small square that flashes red, green, blue, white and black very fast. Drag it over a stuck pixel and leave it for 10-30 minutes; it sometimes frees a stuck sub-pixel. It cannot repair a dead (always black) pixel.

⚠️ Warning: rapidly flashing colours. Do not use or watch it if you are sensitive to flashing light or have photosensitive epilepsy.

Check a monitor, laptop, TV or phone for dead, stuck and hot pixels, backlight bleed and banding with full-screen colours - plus resolution, HDR and refresh rate.

Fill your screen with pure black, white, red, green, blue and other test screens to find dead, stuck and hot pixels, then check backlight bleed, uniformity, banding and sharpness. It works on monitors, laptops, TVs with a browser, tablets and phones, ideally before the return window of a new screen closes. The page also shows your resolution, pixel ratio, colour gamut, HDR support and measured refresh rate, and works out pixel density from the screen size. Everything happens in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my monitor for dead pixels?
Clean the screen, set brightness to normal, press Start and go through each colour full screen, looking closely from about 30 cm (1 ft). A dead pixel shows as a black dot on white and coloured screens, a hot pixel as a white dot on black, and a stuck pixel as a dot of the wrong colour. If a dot moves when you wipe the screen, it was dust.
What is the difference between dead, stuck and hot pixels?
Each pixel has red, green and blue sub-pixels. A dead pixel gets no power and stays black. A stuck pixel has one or two sub-pixels always on, so it shows a fixed red, green, blue or mixed colour. A hot pixel has all three always on and stays white. Stuck pixels can sometimes be revived; dead pixels almost never.
Can a stuck pixel be fixed?
Sometimes. Running the flasher over it for 10-30 minutes, or gently pressing the spot with a soft cloth while the screen is off and on, has freed stuck sub-pixels for some people. It doesn't always work and it cannot fix a dead pixel. If the screen is new, check the seller's or manufacturer's pixel policy: many replace panels with even one bright pixel.
What is backlight bleed and IPS glow?
Backlight bleed is light leaking around the edges of an LCD panel, seen as bright patches on a black screen. IPS glow is a silvery or orange sheen in the corners that changes when you move your head. Both are easiest to see on the near-black screen in a dark room. OLED screens have neither.
Why does the refresh rate show 60 Hz on my 144 Hz monitor?
The browser draws at the rate the operating system runs the screen. Check that the display is set to 144 Hz in the system's display settings, that the cable and port support it, and that battery saving isn't limiting the browser. Then press Measure again.
Does the test work on phones and TVs?
Yes. On a phone or tablet, tap the right side for the next screen and the left side to go back. iPhones don't allow web pages to go fully full screen, so turn the phone sideways and hide the browser bars for the best view. On a smart TV, open the page in the TV's browser and use the remote's arrows.
