Passport Photo Size by Country: cm, mm & Pixel Table
Gizke Team · Published · Reading time: 3 minutes
Most countries use a 35×45 mm passport photo with the head taking up most of the height, but the United States (2×2 inches), Canada (50×70 mm), Türkiye (50×60 mm) and China's visa (33×48 mm) differ. Pick your country in the Gizke passport photo maker, line up the guides on your face and download a photo cut to the exact size, or a print sheet with several copies. Everything runs in your browser; the photo is never uploaded.

Passport photo sizes by country
Every value below comes from the issuing authority's own page. "Head" means the distance from the chin to the top of the head.
- United States (passport and visa, U.S. Department of State): 2×2 in (51×51 mm), head 1 to 1⅜ in (25–35 mm). Digital visa photos: square, 600×600 to 1200×1200 px, up to 240 KB.
- United Kingdom (passport, GOV.UK): 35×45 mm, head 29–34 mm. Online applications: at least 600×750 px, file size 50 KB to 10 MB.
- Canada (passport, Government of Canada): 50×70 mm, head 31–36 mm.
- Australia (passport, Australian Passport Office): 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high, head 32–36 mm.
- Germany (passport and ID card, Bundesdruckerei photo template): 35×45 mm, face 32–36 mm (70–80 % of the photo height); hair is not counted. Plain background, ideally light grey.
- Japan (passport, Ministry of Foreign Affairs): 45×35 mm (height × width) without a border, head 34 mm ± 2 mm, about 4 mm ± 2 mm of space above the head.
- South Korea (passport, Ministry of Foreign Affairs passport portal): 35×45 mm, head 32–36 mm without hair, white background. Digital photos: 413×531 px recommended, JPG up to 500 KB.
- India (passport, Passport Seva guidelines): 35×45 mm, head 36–38 mm (80–85 % of the photo), 630×810 px digitally.
- China (visa, Chinese embassy guidance): 33×48 mm, head 28–33 mm high and 15–22 mm wide, 3–5 mm above the head, at least 7 mm below the chin, white background.
- Türkiye (passport and ID card, Directorate General of Population and Citizenship Affairs): 50×60 mm, white background. No head height is published, so the tool only frames the face evenly.
Why the head size matters as much as the paper size
A photo cut to the right size can still be rejected if the face is too small or too large in it. Authorities check head height because face recognition at border gates needs a consistent scale. That is why the Gizke tool asks you to drag one line to the top of the head and one to the chin: it then crops the photo so the head lands inside the allowed range and shows the result in millimetres.
Background and editing rules
Plain and evenly lit is the common denominator, but the colour differs: white for South Korea and China, plain cream or light grey for the UK, light grey preferred in Germany. Shadows on the face or behind the head are a frequent reason for rejection.
If your wall is not suitable, you can replace the background in the passport photo tool or with the background remover. Note: Australia does not accept photos whose background has been changed or removed, and South Korea does not allow editing the background either. For those passports, photograph yourself against a plain wall instead.
How to make the photo with Gizke
- Stand about a metre from a plain wall, face the camera and take a sharp photo in daylight, with your shoulders in the frame.
- Open the passport photo maker and drop the photo onto the page.
- Choose your country, then drag the red line to the top of your head and the blue line to your chin.
- Download the single photo (JPG) for an online application, or choose a 4×6 in, A4 or Letter print sheet for a photo shop.
- If a portal sets a pixel size or KB limit, adjust it with Resize image or Compress.
Countries that are not in this list
We only list values we could check on an official page. Russia is missing because we could not find a current official specification. There is also no single "EU passport photo standard": each member state sets its own rules, even though many of them use 35×45 mm. Rules change, so check your authority's page again before you apply.
