How to Merge PDF Files for Free, Without Uploading

Gizke Team · Published · Reading time: 4 minutes

To merge PDF files for free, open Gizke's Merge PDF tool, drop in two or more PDFs, drag them into the order you want and press Merge PDF. You can take just some pages from each file and add a bookmark per file. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there's no size limit.

When you need to merge PDFs

Merging comes up all the time, usually right before a deadline:

  • Applications. A job, university or visa application asks for "a single PDF" containing your CV, cover letter, diplomas and references, each of which you have as a separate file.
  • Paperwork for an accountant or landlord. Payslips, bank statements and an ID scan that must go together in one attachment.
  • Scanned pages. A phone scanner app saved every page of a contract as its own PDF, and you need them back as one document.
  • Reports and coursework. A cover page made in one program, the main text exported from another and an appendix someone else sent you.
  • Printing. You'd rather send one file to the printer than open and print ten.

In all of these cases the goal is the same: one file, pages in the right order, nothing missing and nothing that shouldn't be there.

How to merge PDFs step by step

  1. Open the Merge PDF tool.
  2. Drop your PDF files onto the page, or click to choose them. You can add more later with Add PDFs.
  3. Put the files in order. Drag them up and down the list, use the arrow buttons, or press Sort by name if your files are already numbered (for example 01-cv.pdf, 02-letter.pdf).
  4. If you only need some pages from a file, type them in Pages to include, for example 1-3, 5. Leave it empty to take the whole file.
  5. Check the summary at the top of the list, which shows how many files and pages will go into the result.
  6. Give the result a File name, then press Merge PDF and download the merged file.

That's all. The original files are not changed.

Choosing pages: the range field

The Pages to include field takes page numbers and ranges separated by commas:

  • 1-3, 5 takes pages 1, 2, 3 and 5.
  • 5-1 takes pages 5 down to 1, which reverses them. That's handy for documents scanned back to front.
  • 2, 1, 3 puts page 2 first, so you can reorder pages inside a file.
  • An empty field means "all pages".

If you type something the tool can't read, such as a page number that doesn't exist, it tells you which part is wrong before you merge. Each file in the list also shows how many pages it has, so you don't need to open it to check.

Bookmarks and double-sided printing

Add a bookmark for each file is on by default. Each original file becomes a bookmark, named after the file, in the sidebar of PDF readers, pointing to its first page. When a reviewer opens your long application, they can jump straight to "references" instead of scrolling.

Double-sided printing is off by default. When it's on, the tool adds a blank page after any file with an odd number of pages, except the last one. That way every document starts on a fresh sheet when you print on both sides, instead of starting on the back of the previous document's last page. The list marks where a blank page will be added.

What the tool does and doesn't do

  • Pages are copied exactly. Text stays selectable, images keep their resolution and links keep working. Nothing is re-rendered, so merging never lowers quality.
  • Files stay on your device. The PDFs are combined by your browser. Nothing is uploaded, there's no account, no watermark, no file-size or daily limit, and it keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
  • Password-protected files can't be merged. They are marked in the list. If you know the password, remove it first with Unlock PDF, then add the file again.
  • It doesn't rotate pages. If a scanned page is sideways, fix it with Rotate PDF before or after merging.

Common problems and fixes

The merged file is too big to email. Merging adds up the sizes of the files, so a handful of scans can quickly pass an attachment limit. Our guide to compressing a PDF for email explains how to shrink it with the PDF compressor, and what to do if that's not enough.

I only need part of the result. Use the range field before merging, or cut the finished file into pieces with Split PDF.

Pages are in the wrong order inside one file. Write the order you want in the range field, for example 1, 3, 2, 4.

One file shows an error. If it says the file couldn't be opened as a PDF, it may be damaged or not a PDF at all (some downloads are actually web pages with a .pdf name). Try downloading or exporting it again.

Quick checklist before you send

  • Scroll through the merged PDF once. Are all documents there, in the right order?
  • Open the bookmarks panel. Does each document have its own entry?
  • Give the file a name that says what it is, such as "application-jane-doe.pdf" instead of "merged.pdf".
  • Check the size if you're going to email it.

Merging PDFs takes a minute: drop the files in, put them in order, press Merge. Because it all happens on your own device, your CV, payslips and ID scans never pass through anyone else's server.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded when I merge them?
No. The PDFs are read and combined by your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server, there's no size limit or daily quota, and once the page has loaded it works offline too.
Does merging reduce the quality of the pages?
No. Pages are copied into the new file as they are: text stays selectable, images keep their resolution and links keep working. Nothing is re-rendered or recompressed.
Can I take only some pages from a file?
Yes. Type the pages in the field next to the file, for example 1-3, 5. Pages are added in the order you write them, so 5-1 adds them in reverse and 2, 1 swaps the first two. Leave the field empty to include the whole file.
Why won't a file merge?
Usually because it is password-protected or encrypted. If you know the password, remove it first with Unlock PDF, then add the file again. A file that isn't a real PDF is flagged in the list.
The merged PDF is too big to email. What now?
Run it through the PDF compressor, which recompresses the photos inside it. If it's still too large, split it into parts or send only the pages that are needed.
